As racers begin to renew their competition numbers and licenses for the new season, NHRA recognizes a need to clarify the requirements for NHRA membership under General Regulations item 10:4, Credentials, in the 2005 NHRA Rulebook and subsequent revisions. The question on many racers’ minds is “Why is NHRA implementing this requirement?”
NHRA’s primary reason for following the practice of every other major motorsports sanctioning body and requiring racers to become members is simple: Membership ensures that regular racers are covered by NHRA’s $485,000 excess catastrophic medical insurance policy, that they receive the Rulebook each year, and that they receive regular communication from NHRA via National DRAGSTER and other means.
However, the value of membership goes far beyond these core benefits. Members receive a variety of discounts, such as a 10 percent discount on classified advertising in ND, admission discounts for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, savings on travel, and other breaks from NHRA sponsors. Also, members and their guests who attend select POWERade Series events can enjoy relaxing in the Membership Hospitality Center between rounds. Finally, NHRA.com is poised to introduce even more benefits for members at no additional cost. Coming soon are online bonuses such as Friday-Sunday live audiocasts of each POWERade Series event; a “My NHRA” page of customized news that lets each member choose the news most important to them; Personal Points Tracking (PPT) for national and divisional racers; and more.
The rule states that a current NHRA membership is required for participation in any divisional or national NHRA-sanctioned event, or obtaining a new competition license or renewing an existing competition license. Effective Jan. 1, 2006, a current NHRA membership will be required when obtaining a new permanent competition number or renewing a permanent competition number.
The following outline will help racers understand who is affected, and when and how racers can meet the requirement.
WHO IS AFFECTED IN 2005?
Racers obtaining an NHRA competition license for the first time, and racers whose competition license is up for renewal in 2005. Primarily these are E.T. racers, such as those competing in the NHRA Summit Drag Racing Series, if their racing category requires a license.
Racers in the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series are also affected if their racing category requires a license.
WHO IS NOT AFFECTED IN 2005?
Racers obtaining a new competition number or renewing and existing competition number in categories that do not require licensing are not affected in 2005. However, the requirement will apply to these racers in 2006.
Racers whose existing competition license is not due for renewal in 2005 are not affected in 2005. For example, if your competition license is not due for renewal until 2006, you will not need to become a member until you renew in 2006.
Membership has long been required for competitors in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, and the NHRA O’Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League, so this requirement is not new for them.
WHEN DOES THE REQUIREMENT GO INTO EFFECT?
The rule became effective Jan. 1, 2005, but it is a rolling change, meaning that affected racers must become members at the time of their next renewal. For example, if your renewal isn’t due until June, you will not have to meet the membership requirement until then.
HOW CAN RACERS MEET THE REQUIREMENT?
NHRA’s competition-license application forms include a section for membership. CLICK HERE for downloadable forms.
The rolling change allows racers to wait until they receive their next competition renewal notice. A membership section appears on the renewal forms.

Family members who live at the same address as a full NHRA member may qualify for Associate Membership, which includes all the benefits of a full membership but offers the convenience of having only one copy of National DRAGSTER delivered to their home. To find out if you qualify for Associate Membership, call toll free, (800) 308-NHRA.
HOW WILL RACERS SHOW PROOF OF MEMBERSHIP?
The racer’s membership number and expiration date will appear on the competition license/permanent-number card.
When needed, NHRA can provide temporary proof until the card is received
